Cumberlands requires all students obtain a minimum of 60 hours for an associate’s degree and a total of 120 hours for a bachelor’s degree. General Education Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education (Secondary Certification)

Coursework for our accredited bachelor’s degree program in mathematics education is aimed at helping students gain a fundamental understanding of the math and science that govern our everyday modern lives. Throughout your mathematic studies at Cumberlands, you’ll take relevant physics and mathematics coursework—from calculus to differential equations to discrete mathematics and more. As an education student you’ll also gain comprehensive understanding of how to develop lessons, assess progress, personalize instruction, and more. 

Course Requirements

Students pursuing the mathematics education major are also encouraged to take additional mathematics courses selected from the following: 

42 semester hours in professional education - see the catalog listing for the School of Education for professional education requirements.  

A Bachelor of Arts degree requires completing the same courses as a Bachelor of Science with the addition of completing one foreign language sequence through the intermediate level.

A degree in mathematics education with secondary certification at University of the Cumberlands gives you the training you need to earn certifications that qualify you for teaching careers in the high school setting. It also provides students with knowledge and skills that can be used in a variety of fields, from healthcare to law enforcement to natural science management.  

This degree will prepare you to enter the high school classroom as a qualified math teacher. It will also open up a realm of additional job opportunities, as employers continue to prize professionals with a strong background in mathematics due to their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. 

To begin, you should visit your state certifying board’s website to check on licensing requirements, as they can change from state to state. Then you will need to complete your bachelor’s degree in mathematics education. After you finish your degree (well done, you!), you will likely need to pass a state test and apply for a teaching license or certification. Then you will be ready to apply for teaching positions! 

As a mathematics education major, you will take a variety of required physics and mathematics courses, from calculus to differential equations to discrete mathematics and more. In addition, you will also need to complete 42 semester hours of professional education classes. These will teach you how to develop lessons, assess progress, and personalize instruction.
