The University of the Cumberlands Music Department recently hosted a workshop led by legendary jazz musician and educator Mr. Jamey Aebersold. The name Jamey Aebersold has become synonymous with jazz education in recent decades. Mr. Aebersold has published over a 130 volumes of play-a-long recordings for students that want to learn how to improvise jazz solos. He has also hosted the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop for over 50 years.
While at UC, Jamey presented a session on how to improvise jazz. In attendance were students from the UC Music Department along with high school students from local schools from both Kentucky and Tennessee. Accompanying Mr. Aebersold were Louisville area musicians Jonathan Higgins on drum set, Danny Kiely on bass, and Todd Hildreth on piano.
In addition to performing with Mr. Aebersold, these musicians worked in individual masterclasses with student musicians. The day concluded with a performance by Jamey and his quartet joined by UC Music Department faculty Dr. Steven Sudduth on trombone, Joe Jordan on trumpet, and David Threlkeld on tenor saxophone.
