The University of the Cumberlands’s student newspaper, The Patriot, received the third-place General Excellence Award for class 1 student publications at the Kentucky Press Association’s Convention on Friday.
In addition to the General Excellence Award, members of The Patriot’s staff brought home 17 additional awards in 13 categories.
The staff took all three placements in the best business/agribusiness story category. Alyssa Morningstar brought home first place, and Alex Nunn and Elizabeth Spires brought home second and third place awards respectively.
Other first-place wins for The Patriot staff members included Alex Nunn in the best enterprise/analytical story category and Abigail Fletcher in the best picture essay category.
The first-place best special section award was given to The Patriot staff.
Chole Istre was awarded second place in best feature photo with fellow Patriot staff member, Fletcher, rounding out the category in third.
Jenna Rose, Makayla Durham and Nunn all shared the second-place award for best on-going/extended coverage.
The staff of The Patriot took home second place for best front page.
The Patriot brought home five third place awards including best general news story by Rose, best feature story by Haley Bullock, best enterprise/analytical story by Amber Rutherford, and best general news photo and best sports picture by Maranda Young.
Staff members also brought home two certificates of merit for Bullock’s best editorial and Flectcher, Young, Taylor Duke and Mike Krzston’s best use of social media or multi-media.
