University of the Cumberlands’ English department and the department’s literary journal Pensworth are sponsoring The Next Generation Creative Writing Contest.

The English department welcomes submissions of original creative writing, fiction, and poetry from eighth through twelfth-grade students who attend schools within a 200-mile radius of Williamsburg, Kentucky.

To enter students must submit one piece of fiction or nonfiction that can be up to 20 pages or three to five poems. Pages can be single-spaced for poetry or double-spaced for prose. Ten- to twelve-point font is preferred. Students should include their name, contact information, and word count on the document’s first page.

Prizes for The Next Generation Creative Writing Contest will be $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. Students are evaluated solely on literary quality. Submissions open on January 4 and close on March 31.
