Programs within the School include options for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees, with some degrees offered entirely online.

University of the Cumberlands (UC) has merged its Human Services, Psychology, Counseling, and Criminal Justice programs to establish a new School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Programs within the School include options for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees, with some degrees offered entirely online.

“This change positions us to offer new opportunities to students down the road,” said Dr. Matthew Lyons, Dean of the new School. “We are not only trying to position programs for other collaboration, but also to think of future growth and development. This synergy of programs in social and behavioral sciences positions us to capitalize on the growth we’ve already established and think about how to grow into the future.”

All curricula for the programs will remain unchanged. The School offers degrees in Human Services (bachelor’s), Psychology (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate), Counselor Education and Supervision (master’s and doctorate), and Criminal Justice (bachelor’s and master’s).

“The new School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is a collaborative effort designed to offer both faculty and students a strong resource for advocacy and opportunity,” said Dr. Christopher Leskiw, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. “Dr. Lyons brings a wealth of leadership and vision to the School and will enhance existing structures and programs. We look forward to the many possibilities ahead in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.”

Students will benefit from new initiatives in the programs, especially through concentrations and internships, which will give students a competitive advantage in the job market.

“All programs are designed to prepare professionals for the helping professions,” Lyons explained. “The School coalesces programs that address challenges people face daily. But more than that, our programs promote wellness and thriving.”

Lyons hopes to add international collaborations, additional concentrations within degree offerings, and certificate programs to the School’s options in the future. At the moment, there is no timeline set for all of that. Lyons plans to focus on existing programs before expanding programs within the School.
