If you're looking for just one more book to put on your Santa list, then consider Circe by Madeline Miller. Then plan on kicking off the new year with the UC Book Club when we meet to discuss Circe on Wednesday, January 8, at 4 p.m. Via Zoom. This retelling of the adventures of the sorceress from The Odyssey won prizes and made the best book lists when it came out in 2018-19. The New York Times calls the book “bold” and “subversive” as it “manages to be both epic and intimate in its scope, recasting the most infamous female figure from The Odyssey as a hero in her own right.” Ron Charles, writing for The Washington Post, says, “We know how everything turns out – we’ve known it for thousands of years, -- and yet in Miller’s lush reimagining, the story feels harrowing and unexpected.” And NPR asserts, “Whether or not you think you like Greek mythology, this is just great storytelling.”
