If your Thanksgiving includes actually getting to read what you want to read for yourself, don't forget that the UC Book Club is next meeting this coming Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. when the group considers The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. The author uses the familiar murder mystery formula plus a thoughtful exploration of Chicken Hill, a neighborhood shared by African Americans and immigrant Jews. In fact, The New York Times Book Review calls the plot “a murder mystery locked inside a Great American Novel.” The Atlantic names the novel “[c]lassic McBride: He doesn’t shy away from bold statements about the national catastrophes of race and xenophobia, and he always gives us a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. . . .Reading McBride just feels good – we are comforted and entertained and braced for the hard lessons he also delivers.”
Plan now to join us on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving. As always, email Kathy Fish at Kathy.fish [at] ucumberlands.edu (Kathy[dot]fish[at]ucumberlands[dot]edu) to be added to the Zoom invitation list.
