Andrew Powell serves University of the Cumberlands as its Vice-President for Communications and Marketing.
Andrew entered the higher ed space leaving behind the world of politics. He advises anyone considering a life in politics to try any other available vocation first.
In 2018, he helped a team appointed by the University President to lead the college through a tuition reset- a realignment of its pricing model that changed the entire marketing landscape for the college.
Andy likes to tell others that he and the university communications team help to manage marketing for the university from concept design to the mailbox. They have launched two websites for the university and are currently working on expanded functionality and personalized concepts for the second. The team also creates all their admissions materials in house, managing control over messaging, comm flow and advertising reach.
Andy is a graduate of Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in communications and sociology. He is also certified as a Digital Marketing Professional through the Digital Marketing Institute and American Marketing Association. We has worked for a local newspaper developing social media, a website and a digital presence when many of those technologies were in their infancy. He also spent time working for a local government agency as a tourism and community development director with specialization in budget and grant management. For the last decade, he has spent his time in the higher ed space managing marketing teams.
When not at his desk, Andy engages in what has been called chainsaw therapy – helping to maintain miles of hiking trails within public recreation areas.
