If it’s your first time moving into a dorm, here are a few dorm essentials to remember when packing – because you probably already know the basics you need, but there are also some related items that will end up being super useful.

Yes, bring your chargers. And also…
Surge protectors. These are different than extension cords. They have multiple outlets, so you can plug in several things at once.

Yes, bring your bed sheets, pillows, and blanket/quilt/duvet. And also…
Bring a mattress topper to make your bed more comfortable. Your back will thank you later.

Yes, bring your bath products and towels. And also…
Don’t forget to bring a shower caddy and shower shoes to make showering easier if you’re in a community-style dorm.

Yes, bring a mini fridge and microwave. And also…
Bring some sort of storage unit, like a three-tier cart, to nicely organize food.

Yes, bring items to decorate your dorm. And also…
Bring Command hooks/strips to use for your decorations. We’re all basically renters here on campus, so, no holes in the walls. But Command hooks and strips allow us to make our rooms feel homey.

Yes, pack the clothes you plan on wearing. And also…
Bring extra clothes and gear for unexpected weather events. Examples: umbrella, rain jacket, winter coat, gloves.

Yes, bring your shoes. And also…
Consider a hanging organizer to stash them in. This gives you more open floor space!

Yes, bring medication and health items you regularly use or take. And also…
Don’t forget to bring a first-aid kit, even with stuff you don’t normally use. You never know what you might unexpectedly need. Best to be prepared.

Yes, bring regular school supplies such as paper, pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, stapler, etc. And also…
Bring a calendar or planner, either on paper or as a whiteboard. This is super helpful to keep up with assignments and schedules.

Yes, bring your regular laundry supplies. And also…
Consider getting a rolling laundry bag. This makes it so much easier to transport your laundry back and forth from your room to the laundry room.

Yes, bring cleaning wipes. And also…
Bring a broom or vacuum (which one depends on whether your room is carpeted or not), to keep your floors crumb-free.

This obviously isn’t an exhaustive list, but hopefully it helps you as you’re packing and, ultimately, as you’re living in the dorms. Comfort is key, especially when you’re away from home, so hopefully this advice from a current college senior helps you out!
