Cumberlands requires all students obtain a minimum of 60 hours for an associate’s degree and a total of 120 hours for a bachelor’s degree. General Education Requirements

 

Bachelor of Science in Art

Use art to shape your perspective of the world. Through exploring your own skills and seeing examples of other talented artists, you will be inspired to develop your own artistic style. As an art student, you’ll enjoy a handful of organized trips to art museums in nearby cities like Louisville, Cincinnati, and Knoxville where you can gain insight and inspiration toward your own artwork. The curriculum is equipped with challenging courses that offer lessons over a variety of art styles and topics such as art history, drawing, design, computer imaging, painting, sculpting, and photography. 

As you work toward your bachelor's degree in art, our program will encourage you to view yourself as a professional artist and showcase your best work in exhibitions. Past works by faculty and art majors have been featured in solo and group exhibitions and have been reviewed in newspapers, magazines, and catalogues. 

Course Requirements

Nine (9) hours of art electives at the 300 or 400 level. 

A Bachelor of Arts requires all the same courses as a Bachelor of Science with the addition of four classes (12 hours) in a foreign language.

University of the Cumberlands’ art program offers hands-on classes in drawing, design, painting, sculpting, computer imaging, and photography.

Some of them are, and others are more lecture-based. Both formats go hand-in-hand; what you learn in lectures will inform and inspire you to test new techniques in your artwork, and what you create in hands-on classes will add an element of experience and even curiosity to your lecture-based courses.

Contrary to popular belief, you actually have many careers options available with an art degree, such as fine art careers, art museum and curator careers, educational art careers, and design-related careers.

No portfolio is required to apply to be an art major or minor at University of the Cumberlands.

Yes, Cumberlands art students have opportunities to showcase their work in art exhibitions throughout the year. Some students have artwork on display at local businesses as well.
