Speech & Debate Team
Debate Team

Over twenty members of the University of the Cumberlands speech and debate team compete each year in a variety of events. Squad members can participate in both parliamentary debate and individual events. In individual events, students can choose from a variety of speech formats (informative, persuasive, etc.); interpretive categories, including prose and poetry readings (much like reader’s theater); or limited preparation events, such as impromptu speaking.

Each year the team competes in about ten tournaments. While most tournaments are within the state of Kentucky or the surrounding area, over the past two years the team has traveled to competitions in Montreal, Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, D.C., St. Louis and Gatlinburg.

In the past two years the Cumberlands squad had received over two hundred awards, including:

  • First place debate team and overall debate sweeps champions at the Collegiate Forensics Association winter tournament in Montreal, Canada (January 2006)
  • National Champions in Division Three at the National Christian College Forensics Association tournament in Los Angeles, California (March 2005)
  • National Champions in Duo Interpretation, National Runner Up in Lincoln Douglas Debate, and 10 other awards at Pi Kappa Delta Nationals in St. Louis (March 2005)

In the past year our team has more than tripled in size, and we are always looking to add more students. You do not have to have high school experience to compete, and you do not need to be a communication arts major to participate in forensics.
