Many academic departments sponsor clubs and academic honor societies for students with a particular interest in the discipline, so be sure to visit the departments that interest you or contact a faculty member in that department for more information. New clubs spring up every year according to student interest, but here’s a sampling of some that have been a part of life at Cumberland College for a number of years. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be the inspiration for the next organization that others can’t wait to join. Lisa Bartram, Director of Student Activities Academic Team UC's Academic Team is a member of the Kentucky College Quick Recall League adn participates in numerous tournaments each semester. For more information, contact: Dr. Pilant American Chemical Society Student Affiliates (ACSSA) Sponsored by the Department of Chemistry, this club organizes seminars, tours industrial laboratories and graduate schools, performs service projects, and hosts social activities. Volunteers for Appalachian Ministries organize and direct recreational activities and Bible studies for area children. Through the Special Children’s Ministry, students also have the opportunity to work with handicapped children and to train athletes for the Special Olympics. Beta Beta Beta The Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta) Honor Society is a national honor and professional society for students in the biological sciences. The Beta Sigma chapter at University of the Cumberlands strives to stimulate interest, scholarly advancement, and investigation in the biological sciences, and to promote dissemination of information and new interpretations among students of the life sciences. Campus Activity Board (CAB) Sponsored by the Office of Student Services, CAB organizes a vast array of recreational, educational, and social activities on campus including dances, films, and lectures, as well as Welcome Week and Spring Fever events. In addition to the reward of knowing they have eased the new freshman’s transition into college life, ambassadors gain valuable practical work experience. Council for Exceptional Children This organization assists those who have a desire to work with exceptional children by offering support, skill training, and opportunities for helping children through tutoring and other services. Following a week of special training, volunteers are matched with local middle-school students whom they mentor in academic, athletic, social, or service activities, depending on their interest and expertise. Mathematics and Physics Club Open to any student with an interest in mathematics or physics, this club is devoted to developing a deeper appreciation of the natural sciences through a variety of lectures, films, field trips, and social activities. Mountain Outreach No experience is needed to participate in this ministry, which is dedicated to building and repairing homes for area families who live in poverty.
