Each year, Cumberland College hosts numerous guest performers and speakers and
celebrates the talents of its students and faculty through a variety of
lectures, concerts, art exhibitions, and theatrical productions. Many of these
events are free of charge, and most are open to the public.
Art Exhibitions
The Department of Art regularly hosts exhibitions featuring student and faculty work, as well as pieces from the college’s permanent collection. Drop by the gallery in the Andersen Building and visit the art department’s homepage for updates to the online gallery.
Concerts
During the Fall and Spring semesters, the college calendar includes a musical event nearly every week. Each of the nine standing ensembles performs frequently, and music majors fill the schedule with senior recitals. The Phyllis Richardson Wood Faculty Scholarship Recital, one of the most popular annual events in the community, showcases the talents of the music department faculty, along with many students. Additionally, the department annually hosts guest artists as well as several performances in the Fine Arts Series, sponsored by the Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky.
Lecture Series
In addition to the following endowed lecture series, many other academic departments and campus organizations host discussion forums, lectures, and guest speakers each semester. These events are free and open to the entire college community. Most are open to the public.
The Robert L. Palmer Memorial Lecture Series, sponsored by the Department of English and endowed by a generous gift from the Palmer family, brings a writer of national reputation to the campus each October. Since the series was established in 1992, the college has hosted novelists, essayists, and poets including Lee Smith, Jim Wayne Miller, Willie Morris, and, most recently, Scott Russell Sanders.
The Thomas S. Staley Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of Religion and Philosophy and sponsored by the Thomas F. Staley Foundation features noted religious scholars speaking about issues relevant to contemporary religious life, the ministry, and the practice of faith.

Pensworth, a literary journal published annually by the Department of English highlights outstanding literary criticism, fiction, poetry, and artwork by Cumberland College students.
The Upsilonian showcases exceptional works of research written by students in the Department of History and Political Science, many of which have won awards from Phi Alpha Theta, the international honor society in history.
