WILLIAMSBURG, KY.—University of the Cumberlands’ student Misty Gilliam presented her senior art exhibit to the public May 2 through May 6, and a reception for the artist was held on Monday, May 2, in the J.M. Boswell Art Gallery on UC’s campus.

Gilliam, an art major and English minor, is both a writer and an artist, both of which are seen in her display. Her work is largely mixed media, with objects like pencils or pieces of glass pressed meaningfully into some of her pieces. Most of the pieces are also adorned with words—poems or snatches from poems—either painted or cut from paper.

“I am very much inspired by poetry,” she says of the pieces around her, most of which are peppered with words. “Some I wrote, which then inspired the art.”

Gilliam graduates May 7 and will marry UC alum Aaron Sturgill in September. She is from London.
