UC Faculty Member to Perform in Richmond with the TiVo Jazz Orchestra

David Threlkeld, associate professor of music at University of the Cumberlands, will perform with the TiVo Jazz Orchestra at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 10 in Richmond, Ky.

Richmond, Ky.—Everyone is welome to a free concert by the TiVo Jazz Orchestra on Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour. The group of talented musicians will take the audience on a musical journey from the beginnings of the jazz age in 1920s New Orleans all the way to the contemporary fusion sound.

The TiVo Jazz Orchestra features David Threlkeld on woodwinds, Tim Kennedy on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mark Schuerman on trombone, Jay Flippin on keyboards, Bob Hackett on bass, and Gary Kennedy on percussion.

Saxophonist Threlkeld is one of Kentucky’s most well-known jazz performers and educators. He has been director of jazz studies and professor of woodwinds at the University of the Cumberlands for 20 years. He has performed with such notable artists as Lou Rawls, Shirley Jones, The Temptations and the Four Tops.

TiVo Jazz Orchestra is the brain child of Tim Kennedy, who enjoyed a 30-year career as a respected Kentucky band director. Now retired, Kennedy is well into a new career as a professional trumpet player. When Tim contacted renown pianist Jay Flippin for a list of names for the orchestra, little did he know that Flippin himself wanted to play keyboard with this group.

Flippin is recently retired after 33 years teaching jazz studies, theory and music history at Morehead State University. He is the keyboardist and pops arranger for both the Lexington Philharmonic and the Lexington Singers. His compositions and arrangements include more than 2500 works for a variety of genres and artists. Flippin has recently been on tour with the Neville Brothers.

The concert by the TiVo Jazz Orchestra is part of the Second Sunday at Our Saviour concert series. The concert is free, but donations at the door to support mission efforts in Haiti would be most welcome. The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour is located at 2323 Lexington Rd. in Richmond.
