WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — University of the Cumberlands has created a new position, the dean of student employment to coordinate and supervise the student Federal Work-Study program. As part of a plan to restructure and improve Cumberlands’ student workforce, the dean will be responsible for identifying and posting positions and job descriptions and assigning jobs to each department, as well as training and maintaining communication with labor supervisors.

Peggy Woods, who assumed the duties of the new administrative position this spring, brings to the position experience gained from a career spent in what is now the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Human Services. Following her retirement from the cabinet, Woods became a training specialist for Eastern Kentucky University. A native of Whitley County who grew up and attended high school in Georgia, Woods is a graduate of Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) with a bachelor’s degree in business.

Woods is pleased with the program that provides students a wonderful opportunity to develop skills, build a resume and develop a good work ethic, which will prepare them well to enter the workforce.

“Student employment through the work-study program at University of the Cumberlands is designed to allow students to hold a job, while offering them financial benefits that can be applied towards their educational needs,” says Woods. “The work experience teaches them the value of promptness, industry, dependability and initiative. Such values combined with professional skills invite success now and in the future.”

One thing that attracted Woods to the position is the fact that it is an opportunity to develop the program. “I am excited to be part of building this program from the ground up,” she says. “I love young people and want to do everything I can to be a light for them.”

Woods has been a welcome addition to the Cumberlands community, according to Steve Morris, Cumberlands’ vice president for business services.

“Our students and staff will benefit from Ms. Wood’s knowledge as she works to support both student employees and supervisors in this newly created position,” said Morris. “This position is greatly needed on campus, and as dean of student employees, Ms. Woods is a great addition to the Human Resources staff.”
