Missouri Church Group Helps with UC’s Appalachian Ministries

Williamsburg, KY- University of the Cumberlands’ (UC) Appalachian Ministries (AM) and nearly 50 volunteers from Liberty Christian Fellowship in Kansas City, Missouri joined forces the first week of June to bring Vacation Bible School (VBS) to kids at Brush Arbor Apartments in Williamsburg. The team also served with Cedar Ridge Ministries, made minor repairs to a few homes within Whitley County, and helped with repairs at the Homeless Shelter.

“We have been coming to this area for several years now working with Mountain Outreach,” said Katherine Cole of Liberty Christian Fellowship. “We have gotten to know some good people and have become quite familiar with this area. Brush Arbor is an area we feel needed and as a social worker, I feel compelled to come teach these kids about God, play games with them, and just let them have fun.”

The AM workers and church volunteers held VBS with kids on the outside lawn of Brush Arbor apartments and the children poured out of the homes to come learn of God’s grace, listen to music, play games, make crafts, and enjoy a cookout. About 30 kids attended.

The group from Missouri brought 47 people with them to help serve those in need in the Williamsburg area. The team also assisted Cedar Ridge Ministries with various projects and worked on the Homeless Shelter, repairing the roof and a room that needed a lot of attention and remodeling. They also built a ramp for a home whose resident has cancer and will soon be released from the hospital and is wheelchair bound.

Established in 1975, Appalachian Ministries gives students the opportunity to minister to area children, youth and families. Under the direction of the Appalachian Ministries director, student workers pick up and take participating children to local churches to lead them in recreation, crafts, games, and Bible lessons.
