England and Smith Earn George I. Alden Endowed Scholarship


Williamsburg, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands (UC) honored Sarah England (Versailles, Ky.) and Jonathan Smith (Central City, Ky.) with the George I. Alden Endowed Scholarship for Full Tuition on April 27, 2014 in the Gatliff Chapel during the 55th Annual Honors Day program.

In 1981, the George I. Alden Trust established the George I. Alden Endowed Scholarship Fund at Cumberlands. The income from this fund is to be used to provide one-half tuition scholarships for six students and full tuition for two students, all of whom must be majoring in the scientific areas. To be eligible to receive one of the two full tuition scholarships, a student must have previously won a one-half scholarship.


Sarah England is a junior majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. She plans to attend medical school and do medical mission work after graduation.

Jonathan Tyler Smith is a junior majoring in biology with minors in Spanish and chemistry. He plans to attend medical school and pursue a career as a physician after graduation.

Both Sarah and Jonathan were also named to the University’s High Honor Roll. Students earning this honor have attained a minimum of 3.85 cumulative standing.

And last, but certainly not least, both recipients were named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Who’s Who is open to juniors and seniors who have been selected by the faculty and staff. These students have excelled in one or more of the following areas: participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities; citizenship and service to the school and community; and potential for future achievement.
