Williamsburg, KY. – The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Math and Physics Department presented Rufus Deron Higgins (Corbin, Ky.) with the Esther A. Compton Mathematics Award during the Fifty-Fifth Annual Honors Day Sunday, April 27, 2014 in the Gatliff Chapel on UC’s campus.

Higgins was also named to the University’s High Honor Roll. Students recognized for this honor must attain a minimum of 3.85 cumulative grade point average standing.

And last, but certainly not least, Rufus was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. These students have excelled in one or more of the following areas: participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities; citizenship and service to the school and community; and potential for future achievement.

Higgins, the son of Rufus and Thelma Higgins and a graduate of Corbin High School, has double majors in mathematics and chemistry with a minor in secondary education. Last year, he served as president of the Kentucky Beta Chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, a national honor society in mathematics. Higgins was graduated from UC in December and is currently substitute teaching in local schools. He plans to start soon on a master’s degree.
