Merrick Receives Human Services award at UC


Williamsburg, KY- University of the Cumberlands (UC) presented Al Merrick with the Human Services Award during the 55th Annual Honors Day held Sunday, April 27th, in the Gatliff Chapel on campus.

The Department of Human Services selected Merrick (Pineville, KY) based on his excellent grade point average, his commitment to the department, and his service to the university and community.

During his time at UC, Malcolm was a Mid-South Conference First Team All-Conference selection as well an NAIA Academic all-American kicker for the University of the Cumberlands football team. He has tutored many students, often at the request of the student, on his own time. Al currently serves as vice president of Rob Cook House council and has also played trombone in the Jazz band and University band.

In addition, Merrick was also named to the J.T. Vallandingham Scholastic Honor Society. In order to be eligible for membership, a student must have completed at least 96 semester hours as a full-time student and have a 3.5 standing or better each semester. The student must have a cumulative standing of 3.7 or better. Students who have transferred to the University have a different set of rules depending on G.P.A. and number of hours taken at UC.

Merrick was also named to the University’s High Honor Roll. Students recognized for this honor must attain a minimum of 3.85 cumulative grade point average standing.

Merrick is the son of Dr. Bruce and Regina Merrick and he has a double major in human services and criminal justice. He will be attending the University Of Missouri School Of Law this fall in hopes of becoming an attorney.
