Cumberlands Honors Retiree Dr. Melvin Mahone


Williamsburg, KY. - On Thursday, April 24th, University of the Cumberlands (UC) honored retiree Dr. Melvin Mahone at the 22nd Annual Faculty-Staff Dinner.

Dr. Melvin Mahone was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He served in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam and was honorably discharged after combat. Mahone was graduated with a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Sociology and Corrections from Chicago State University in Chicago, IL. He then was graduated with a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and corrections from Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, OH.

Over the course of several decades Mahone has worked in every area of the Criminal Justice system, and has taught Criminal Justice courses at several colleges and universities. He was the Dean and Coordinator of Criminal Justice at Taylor Business Institute in Chicago, IL and Olympic College in Bremerton, WA. He is also a published writer. He has authored two books: “Coping with Stress and Building Leadership: One Man’s Journey” and “Prison Privatization in America: Costs and Benefits.”

He came to University of the Cumberlands in 2011 to teach in the Criminal Justice department. In reflecting on his time at Cumberlands, Melvin remarked, "I have been employed as an adjunct instructor and professor at numerous universities, and this university is the best one of all. I appreciate the open door policy that all the administrators have at this university at all times."

Mahone is married and resides with his wife Pat in Knoxville, Tennessee. He plans to continue working as a motivational speaker and author.
