Cumberlands honors Dr. Leif Deyrup for Teaching Excellence

Williamsburg, KY. - On Thursday, April 24th, University of the Cumberlands (UC) honored Dr. Leif Deyrup, Associate Professor of Biology, with the 2014 Teaching in Excellence Award at the 22nd Annual Faculty-Staff Dinner.

Each year, based on recommendations by students, faculty and staff members, UC honors one faculty member with the award.

Deyrup began working at UC in 2008 and has since been a huge asset to the Biology department. He has been a participant in the Insights program, has participated in the QEP Cadre, has presented for faculty colloquia and has even volunteered for committee work. Deyrup has also worked with the ARC, helping to train tutors. Since arriving at UC, he has constantly sought advice from peers on ways to improve classroom teaching and has used student feedback to help develop even more effective teaching practices.

One colleague of Deyrup’s observed that he, “Is genuinely interested in continually improving his teaching and always holds his students to both high ethical and academic standards.”

Deyrup values accessibility to students displaying humor, openness and respect for each individual. His openness includes sharing his own struggles with dyslexia and the many challenges that he had to overcome in order to succeed in academia. He has, without a doubt, succeeded.

Besides his excellent work in the classroom, he has also actively pursued various research projects in the field of biology and his work has been published in peer reviewed journals on several occasions. In fact, his research on bees has even led to the discovery of a new species.

Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; 10 pre-professional programs; ten graduate degrees distributed over eight areas, including two doctorates and seven master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
