UC student plans mission trip to Uganda

Williamsburg, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands (UC) student Jessica Upchurch (Stanford, Ky.) is planning a mission trip to Uganda, Africa from June 11-22, 2014.

“I’ve been on two mission trips before to Peru and Jamaica. Africa has always been my dream mission trip,” said Upchurch.

Upchurch and her cousin, Haley Novotny, started the mission team. The 20 member group mostly consists of Upchurch’s family and friends from the mission trip to Jamaica. They will be joining the Novotny’s missionary friends who work in Uganda. On this mission trip, they’ll be going to schools and orphanages as well as providing medical clinics. Upchurch’s cousin, Nathan Novotny who’s a surgeon, recently returned from the area that they will be working in.

“The living conditions are extremely bad,” said Upchurch about Dr. Novotny’s findings. “The hunger that the people have for God and the love that they want, they give you. It’s just incredible and it overrides everything.”

Upchurch will be leading the games and activities that they will be doing at the schools and orphanages. She’ll also help her cousin with the medical clinics in any way that she can. “We’ll basically just love on everyone and I’m so excited,” said Upchurch.

As a senior, Upchurch is seeking God’s will for her life after graduation. She plans to obtain her master’s degree in occupational therapy. Upchurch feels God called her to this career in Jamaica when she became buddies with a disabled girl living in an orphanage. She also wants to go on mission trips at least every two years if not every year.

Upchurch has a double major in physical education and exercise sport science and is minoring in public health. She recently completed her career on the Patriot hardwood as a four year member of the varsity women’s basketball team.

Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees more than 40 major fields of study; ten pre-professional programs; ten graduate degrees distributed over eight areas, including two doctorates and seven master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
