Jesse Stuart Scholar to Present Palmer Lecture

WILLIAMSBURG, KY. - University of the Cumberlands (UC) Department of English has announced that Dr. James M. Gifford, CEO and Senior Editor of the Jesse Stuart Foundation, will deliver the school’s 2014 Dr. Robert L. Palmer Memorial Lecture at 7:30 PM, Tuesday, April 22, 2014, in the auditorium of the Luecker Building. The event is free, and the public is invited.

Dr. Gifford earned the B.A. degree from Maryville College, the M.A. degree from Middle Tennessee State University, where he taught from 1969-71, and his Ph.D. in history from the University of Georgia. He has published extensively in historical, educational, and literary journals, and he has won professional awards as a teacher, author, and editor. Some of his most significant work has been reissuing and introducing out-of-print works by Stuart and the 2010 Stuart biography, Jesse Stuart: An Extraordinary Life, written with Erin Kazee.

The idea for a lecture series to commemorate Dr. Robert L. Palmer’s many years of dedicated service to Cumberland College originated with Dr. Palmer’s nephew, Mr. John L. Palmer, a prominent businessman from Jackson, Mississippi, and later U. S. Ambassador to Portugal. His generous gift established the annual lecture series bringing outstanding authors to the Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) campus. So honoring Dr. Palmer is appropriate, for he was a man who loved and respected the power of the written word to please and to instruct.
