Cumberlands Receives $450,000

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands announced it has received $450,000—$200,000 of which was bequested from former Cumberlands’ Trustee Arthur Dale’s will and $250,00 was given in honor of Trustee Dr. J. Charles Smiddy’s late wife Wilma.

Dale, a Cumberlands’ trustee from 1969 to 1978, was a life-long friend of the university and has given generously over the years. One such donation was the Angel Dale House, which now serves as Cumberlands Baptist Campus Ministries’ residence.

Smiddy, a trustee since 1995, is responsible for the university’s 10,000 square feet, three-floor expansion of its library, which includes a media center and computer labs. This 1992 expansion was named the J. Charles Smiddy Learning Resource Center in honor of Smiddy’s commitment to the education of Cumberlands’ students.

In remembrance of his wife, Smiddy’s donation will be used to build a water fountain in front of the center that proudly bears his name.

University of the Cumberlands, located in Williamsburg, Kentucky, is a private liberal arts college in its 117th year of operation. Cumberlands offers four undergraduate degrees in 37 major fields of study, 30 minors and nine pre-professional programs, as well as online and accelerated, non-traditional programs for adults.
