Angel Smith receives the Human Services Award

Williamsburg, Ky. - University of the Cumberlands (UC) presented Angel Smith (Crab Orchard, KY) with the Human Services Award during the 54th annual Honors Day Program on Sunday, April 21st.

The award winner in the Department of Human Services is selected based on GPA, commitment to the department, and service to the university and community.

She was also named to the University’s High Honor Roll. Students recognized for this honor must attain a minimum of 3.85 cumulative grade point average standing.

Angel, the daughter of Ernie and the late Priscilla Hood, is a double major in human services and psychology while maintaining a 3.97 GPA. She is married to Lucas Smith, also from Crab Orchard. She is a member of Psi Chi and the JTV Honor Society.

During her time at UC, Angel has tutored students in the ARC. She also participated in an independent research project through the Appalachian College Association and University of North Carolina at Asheville. Her paper was titled: “Do Prison-Based Ministries Positively Impact Participants?” and will be published pending minor revisions.

Not only has Angel maintained high standards of academic excellence, but she has done so while obtaining her degrees in just three years, and coping with the unexpected loss of her mother. Angel plans to take a year off before attending graduate school at the University of Louisville to earn her MSW. She hopes to obtain her CADC in the near future and provide substance abuse counseling.
