The department continues to find new and innovative ways of conducting business and classroom activities that continually earn praise from several high ranking committees. UC Information Technology Director Donnie Grimes has been an integral part of the technological advances the UC campus has experienced over the years and his work has helped to carry the campus into the 21st century.

Recently, UC President Dr. James H. Taylor named Donnie Grimes Vice President of Information Services. Grimes is the ninth vice president named to the President’s Cabinet.

“I have a love for University of the Cumberlands, and I appreciate Dr. Taylor providing me the opportunity to serve the University in a new and exciting way,” said Grimes. “Technology is rapidly changing and is central to the operation of the University. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that these changes will provide.”

Since coming to UC in 1980, Grimes has been the Director of Information Technology, a professor in the Information Systems Department, and the Campus Network Director. He oversees and creates all data related technology including web servers, iLearn, MyUC student portal, network infrastructure (wired and wireless), ERP system, and internet technology and its safety.

In his 23 years at UC, Grimes has won numerous awards and accolades for his service and the work he provides the University. In the last few years alone he has earned awards for “Best Online Service”, “Most Successful Infrastructure Project”, “Best New Campus Application”, “Most Innovative Use of Technology for Instructional Purposes”, and “Best Student Online Service” by the Association of Kentucky Independent Colleges.

“I’m delighted to announce Mr. Grimes has been promoted to the Vice President level because of his expertise and knowledge,” said Dr. Taylor. “It is now common for colleges and universities to name a vice president in IT, as IT becomes an ever increasing portion of our work. Over the years I’ve found Donnie Grimes to be highly efficient and effective. He is productive with a sharp eye toward containing costs while simultaneously always being pleasant and understated.”

Grimes has also earned Cumberlands prestigious Service Award given to a University staff member who exemplifies student service, visitor service, staff/faculty service, and community service.

Before being employed at UC, Grimes was a student at the University earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He then earned his Master’s in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee. When asked why he chose this field, Grimes said, “I’ve loved technology all of my life. Some of my earliest memories involve taking apart my father’s radio and putting it back together. I was hooked when I got my first computer at the age of eleven.”
