UC Professor has book named to Choice’s Outstanding Academic Titles

Williamsburg, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands (UC) professor Dr. Barry A. Vann’s latest book, Puritan Islam: The Geoexpansion of the Muslim World was named to Choice’s 2012 annual Top 25 Outstanding Academic Titles (OAT) list. Choice’s annual OAT list is widely recognized in the academic community for its coverage of the most significant scholarly titles published each year.

Dr. Vann is a professor of geography and higher education at UC. Puritan Islam is the sixth book that he has written throughout his career. Some of Dr. Vann’s previous works include, Rediscovering the South’s Celtic Heritage and, In Search of Ulster-Scots Land and Geography Toward History: Studies in the Mediterranean Basin and Mesopotamia.

“When I learned that the American Library Association named Puritan Islam as one of the 25 best academic titles of 2012, I was happy and a little surprised,” said Vann. “The fact that the book was published was a miracle; it had been rejected by over 20 publishers. In fact, Prometheus Books, my publisher, had rejected an earlier version of it in 2007 because I had not established a name for myself in the sociology and geography of religions and demography. With the publication of In Search of Ulster Scots Land: the Birth and Geotheological Imagings of a Transatlantic People in 2008 and with me being co-author of Geography Toward History: Studies in the Mediterranean Basin and Mesopotamia in 2009 along with a number of peer reviewed articles with migration and religious themes, the editors at Prometheus Books decided to take a chance on Puritan Islam.”

Choice is a publishing unit of the Association of College & Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. Founded in 1963, Choice has been the premier review journal for scholarly publications for nearly 50 years and is the leading North American source for reviews of new scholarly books and electronic resources.
