Dr. Barry Vann named Alumni of the Year from Roane State Community College

Williamsburg, Ky. - Dr. Barry Vann, Director of Community and Higher Education and professor of geography at University of the Cumberlands (UC), was selected for the honor of Alumnus of the Year by Roane State Community College. Vann is director of the Ed.D. program at UC.

Dr. Vann struggled in life with early poverty and put forth much effort in developmental courses in math and English. Despite these early challenges, he completed his undergraduate, masters, and two doctorate degrees. He graduated from Roane State in 1985 and received his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Tech in 1988.

Vann has a master’s degree in geosciences from Western Kentucky University, a doctorate in adult education from the University of Arkansas, and a doctorate dually awarded by the Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences and the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

He recently completed his seventh book, The Forces of Nature, and has been interviewed on numerous radio and television shows including Fox News Channel’s “Spirited Debate” with Lauren Green, “The Mancow Experience,” “Science Fantastic” with Michio Kaku and “Ecotopia,” with Stephen and Susan Tchudi.

His sixth book, Puritan Islam: The Geoexpansion of the Muslim World, is housed in the Marine Corps Research Library, The Federal Bureau of Investigation Academic Library, and the Defense Intelligence Agency. Ina review of the book for Choke Magazine, a research publication of the American Library Association, R.W. Benfield of Central Connecticut University wrote that Puritan Islam is “Perhaps the best geographical text on the subject since 2000.”

“The fact that there were still faculty members at Roane State who kept track of my career, reveals much about the student-centered nature of the institution,” said Dr. Vann. “The professors I had at Roane State were among the best teachers I have had the good fortune to know. I am proud to be a Roane State alum.”

Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; twelve graduate degrees, including two doctorate, two specialist and eight master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
