UC Percussion Ensemble Presents Concert

Williamsburg, Ky. - On Wednesday, November 14, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Percussion Ensemble featured their students and UC drumline in their Percussion Chamber Music Recital in the Nell Moore Recital Hall in the Grace Crum Rollins Center.

Throughout the semester, the students have been rehearsing many pieces in preparation for the event. Director of Percussion Studies, James R. Corcoran, Jr. led the event sharing background information regarding the students and their individual performances as well as having the students perform some of his own compositions. Having lost about 6 students to graduation last May, the group was very young group but full of talent.

“I am very proud of the young group of students I have this year. They have really stepped up and taken leadership roles throughout the semester,” said Corcoran. “This recital really gives the students the chance to show off their skills as individuals as well as within a group.”

The recital consisted of many of the students performing solo pieces designed for their specific instrument of study. Students as young as first semester, freshman surprised the crowd with their performances. Not only did the percussion students perform solo pieces, but the UC drumline also performed 5 cadences. Mostly seen on the Marching Band field, the drumline performed pieces that were recognized by all who attended the event.

The Percussion Ensemble is designed to give the percussionist an intensive playing experience. In the fall semester, the Percussion Ensemble works on development of the rudimental-style of playing, focusing primarily on marching percussion and marching band music. The spring semester provides opportunities to play a wide variety of styles and pieces including solo, chamber, and ensemble literature, modern styles, rudimental and world music. This ensemble is open to interested Percussionists, according to the needs of the ensemble.

Located in Williamsburg, KY, University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; nine graduate degrees, including two doctorates, a specialist, and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
