University of the Cumberlands hosts annual Dare to Compare: Fitness Five

Williamsburg, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands (UC) hosted the Dare to Compare: Fitness Five Health and Fitness Fair Event on Thursday, October 4 at the O. Wayne Rollins Center gym. This event has been in place for over 10 years.

Dare to Compare is a free, bi-annual event sponsored by UC’s Department of Health, Exercise and Sport Science (HESS) and the Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center (CRCCC). D2C is designed to be a fun and educational health and fitness program for all ages, and the public is encouraged to take advantage of the free health assessment screenings provided throughout the day’s activities.

“This is my second year participating in the Fitness Fair. I like having the opportunity to go and see the difference in my health from the year before,” said student Hannah Johnson (Berea, KY).

Nearly 300 people from the community and UC attended the event and had their blood cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure measured free of charge by Jellico Community Hospital. Several other community organizations set up booths as well, including Christopher Chiropractic whose booth featured a massage table.

Participants were able to have five components of fitness assessed by the HESS faculty and senior level majors. They were assessed based on their cardio respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility, and muscular strength as well as having height, weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index measured. After they completed their five components of health, participants were able to turn their assessment sheet in for a chance to win prizes.

Nine health and fitness professionals represented the Jellico, Williamsburg and Corbin areas and providing information, counseling and resources: Whitley County Health Department, Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center, Jellico Community Hospital, Whitley County Extension Office, Christopher Chiropractic, Andrea Munoz/Health Coach, Tupperware, and PT Solutions.
