Cumberlands named one of America’s Best Universities

Williamsburg, Ky. – On Wednesday, September 12th, U.S. News and World Report released their 2013 University rankings and University of the Cumberlands (UC) was named one of “America’s Best Universities.”

In its 2013 rankings, U.S. News listed UC in the Regional Universities category. The institutions designated as regional universities provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs; the difference is that they offer few, if any, doctoral programs. The magazine examined 625 higher education institutions in the regional category and ranked Cumberlands in the top tier in the South, one of four designated regions used for the rankings, which also include North, Midwest, and West.

The U.S. News ranking system rests on two pillars. The formula uses quantitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality. First, schools are categorized by mission, derived from the breakdown of types of higher education institutions developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Next, each college is compared on up to 16 indicators of academic excellence. Each factor is assigned a weight that reflects how much a measure matters. Finally, the colleges and universities in each category are ranked against their peers, based on their composite weighted score.

Dr. Jim Taylor, president of University of the Cumberlands, was pleased with the news. “At University of the Cumberlands, we offer outstanding educational programs. With a highly qualified, dedicated and up-to-date faculty, we continually strive to ensure that the educational opportunities afforded our students are our number one priority. In addition, our campus facilities provide the best possible learning environment for our students. Our U.S. News ranking is especially gratifying as it validates our programs, reflects the opinions of our peers and places Cumberlands among the best schools in America. We truly are pleased with this recognition by U.S. News and World Report.”

Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; twelve graduate degrees, including two doctorate, two specialist and eight master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
