Dr. Cindy Norton, professor and chair of Cumberlands’ Health, Exercise and Sport Science (HESS) Department, stated, “The event offers participants an opportunity to assess their five components of fitness as well as health components such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood cholesterol. The event has been most successful in reaching college age students, faculty, and staff as well as community members who are interested in achieving and maintaining a higher level of health and fitness.”

Almost 300 people participated in the event where they were able to have their cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure measured free of charge compliments of Jellico Community Hospital. In addition, students were able to have their five components of fitness assessed by the HESS faculty and senior level majors.

There were eight exhibitors representing the Jellico, Williamsburg and Corbin areas. Health and fitness professionals provided health and/or fitness information, counseling and resources to participants at the event and included the following organizations: Whitley Co. Health Department, Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center and Rape Victims Services, Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center and Early Intervention/First Steps, Care Plus, Jellico Community Hospital, PT Solutions, Live Well, and Christopher Chiropractic.

"It has been a privilege to be a part of Dare to Compare: Fitness Five (D2C:F5) from its infancy to its present state,” stated Norton. “Last Thursday marked the end of my service with D2C:F5 since I will be retiring from UC in July 2012.
