Williamsburg, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Music Department hosted a concert on January 19th, 2012 presented by The Heartland Quartet, a saxophone quartet from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL) in the recital hall of the McGraw Music Building. The quartet is currently on tour and performed at the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C. after their performance at UC.

The quartet played a set of classical music including Toccata in F by Marty Paich, Danza: El que bailo con el Diablo by R.A. Moulds, Chanson d’Autrefois by Gabriel Pierne, Concertino by Marcel Poot, and Toccata and Fugue in D minor by J.S. Bach.

One of the quartet’s members, Bobby Fuson II (’09), is a graduate of UC and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in performance at UNL. Bobby was the perfect addition to Dr. Paul Haar’s alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone ensemble as he plays the soprano saxophone.

“I was particularly proud to have Bobby Fuson back on our campus and to be able to witness firsthand the progress that he has made since his graduation from UC,” commented Dr. David Threlkeld, an assistant professor in UC’s music department. “He has become both a very fine musician and teacher and I am honored to have had him as a student of mine.”

Threlkeld was responsible for the quartet coming to Williamsburg for this special performance. “I was very pleased to have the opportunity to host such a fine group of musicians on our campus,” commented Threlkeld. “The members of the ensemble spent time during the day working with our music students and sharing their experiences and expertise. The performance itself was very good. The quartet performed some very difficult literature at a high level and provided our students with a glimpse of what is possible with dedication and hard work.”
