UC's Sigma Beta Delta Visits Williamsburg Elementary

Williamsburg, Ky. – Giving back to the community, making a difference, changing lives, and being a positive influence are values that University of the Cumberlands (UC) strives for. Every individual or organization that has had the opportunity to be associated with UC has seen these character traits on display every day.

UC’s Hutton Schools of Business’ (HSB) Sigma Beta Delta Honors Society is a program that embraces the challenge of providing a helping hand to others; even in a time when these morals seem to be slipping away from today’s generation. Recently, the Sigma Beta Delta spent some time at Williamsburg Elementary School visiting the third grade classes of Ms. Charlotte Smith and Ms. Della Shelton.

“We are very happy to do this for the students because they learn a lesson about money and get to meet college students that they look up to,” exclaimed Dr. Margaret Combs, Chair of the HSB.

As the students and HSB faculty representatives entered the classrooms’ it was easy to see the excitement and joy that can across the faces of each child. Each class went through a lesson on saving money and the benefits of having these skills.

According to UC student William Marshall (Lynch, KY), “This lesson is needed to instill value of saving money to contribute to society.”

Each student was given the chance to talk about the toys or items they want to purchase most. Then a challenge was issued to develop a method of saving up the money to get that special item they always wanted.

“It’s important to teach the value of a dollar to these kids as it gives the value of knowledge to them,” said UC student Eric Hodgson (Canton, GA). “If you know how and can save money than anything is possible.”

After the lesson was complete students were treated to a gift from the HSB as each one received a piggy bank to encourage them to start saving early. The piggy banks were just a small part of the overall message; however, they provided a lot of joy in the hearts of the elementary students. Some even stated they would start saving as soon as they got home.

The Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society for Business, Management and Administration chapter was established in December, 2006. The purposes of Sigma Beta Delta are to encourage and recognize scholarship and achievement among students of business, management and administration, and to encourage and promote personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind.
