Mountain Outreach hosts annual Kids Gift Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — University of the Cumberlands’ (UC) Mountain Outreach (MO) hosted its annual Kids Gift Day on Saturday, Nov. 19. Twenty-four children attended, choosing and wrapping Christmas gifts for their parents or guardians.

While the gifts chosen on Saturday were meant to be given to adults, Kids Gift Day is all about the kids, says Marc Hensley, director of MO.

“The whole idea comes from the premise that we want children to experience the joy and happiness of giving,” said Hensley. “The families we serve cannot afford to buy gifts for their children; much less do they have money for children to buy for mom and dad.”

Through donations from various organizations and individuals Mountain Outreach is able to provide modest items for the children to choose from. Perfume, winter gloves and baseball caps are a few of the items offered, and children get to choose two gifts: one for mom and one for dad.

Mountain Outreach is a University of the Cumberlands construction ministry, with students and volunteers completing 135 homes and making repairs and renovations to hundreds more in the last 27 years. The organization has sponsored Gift Day for more than a decade, providing Christmas gifts for needy families in the area.

Inquiries about Gift Day and how individuals, businesses or churches might help in the future can be directed to the Mountain Outreach office at (800) 343-1609, extension 4346, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
