UC Theatre Department ventures 'Into the Woods' with fall musical production

Williamsburg, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Theatre program opened their fall production of "Into The Woods" on Thursday November 3rd, 2011 in the Kohn Theatre. The popular Stephen Sondheim musical features student, alumni and faculty work, ranging from acting to scenic design. "Into the Woods" features book by James Lapine and music and lyrics composed by Stephen Sondheim.

This production is directed by Kim Miller, scenic design by Carl Walling, music direction by David Etter, choreography by Lindsay Baker and costumes by Alice Neff. Other important production roles are taken by students including assistant technical director Mike Perkins, sound designer and operator Peter Embree, props manager Kyla Fitzgerald, stage manager Susan Stephenson and assistant scenic designer and head scenic charge artist Jordyne Gunthert.

"Into the Woods" blends well-known fairy tale characters into one immersive story, linking the plotlines of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and others. While initially the stories progress as the audience expects them too, eventually the characters are forced to address more realistic problems in their lives and relationships.

"It's been a real joy working with the cast members and having a part in one of my favorite musicals," says senior Rebecca Partin, who plays the Baker's Wife in the production. "This show is both a challenge and an adventure. It has a way of following you home and becoming relevant in the real world."

The UC theatre program offers a range of performance and learning opportunities for majors and non-majors. They present two main stage productions a year including one musical and one play. Students are also given the opportunity to direct smaller black-box productions throughout the semester to assist in coursework and resume work. Applied coursework is available in many aspects of the theatre including lightning, sound, scenic design, stage management, arts administration, directing, community outreach, theatre history and a variety of acting courses.

Located in Williamsburg, KY, University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of student; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master's degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
