Cumberlands Debate Team Ranks High at Berea Tournament

Williamsburg, Ky - Members of University of the Cumberlands (UC) debate team competed at the 9th annual Berea Debate tournament at Berea College on October 21-22.

Against a field of nearly twenty five schools from ten different states, the squad received the 3rd Place Debate Sweepstakes award in the large school division of the tournament.

Two of the teams including Seth Stoffle (Seymour, TN), Justin Durbin (Somerset, KY), and Genia Vickers (McKee, KY) placed in the top ten debate teams. Caleb Stoffle (Seymour, TN) and Matthew Kelley (Corbin, KY) also represented the college in the competition. Seth and Justin (team captains) extended their thanks to all the novice competitors on the team as “without their efforts we would not have placed as well as we did.”

UC Team Sponsor Jay Bourne commented “I was pleased with our performance overall. There were a lot of good teams there from all over the country. To do this well at our first tournament with this many first year competitors indicates we are going to have a successful year ahead of us.”

The debate team competes in tournaments in teams of two against other schools in their division. University of the Cumberlands was the only team last year to place in the top ten in three different types of debate at the Phi Kappa Delta National Debate.
