Cumberlands to Present Into the Woods

Williamsburg, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Theatre program is selling tickets for the performances of the fall musical Into the Woods in the Kohn Theatre of the Grace Crum Rollins building on the UC campus.

In James Lapine’s story of Into the Woods, popular fairy tale characters Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack from “Jack and the Beanstalk” live in the same village and must venture “into the woods” to achieve their wishes. Not only do their wishes conflict with each other, but Jack’s beanstalk brings revenge-seeking Giants to the village that spread destruction and sadness until the characters band together to fight back. The story is told through the words and music of Stephen Sondheim and the musical features popular musical numbers “Hello, Little Girl” and “Agony” in addition to the haunting “Stay With Me.”

The decision to produce Into the Woods at UC is result of many classes of students lobbying the faculty to do the musical. This fall, the talent pool was just right to fill the roles and singing parts needed to perform the show. Alisha Bruce, UC alum and one of the (former) students most committed to the show, plays Jack’s Mother, and fellow UC alum Russell Ridenour plays The Narrator. These performers are joined by soon-to-be alumni Kara Watkins as The Witch and Jordyne Gunthert as Rapunzel. Several students new to the theatre program round out the cast.

Due to the serious plot twists surrounding the Giants’ appearance in the village, this production may not be for very young viewers. For more mature, yet discerning, audience members, the show takes some dark turns but is not graphic in the portrayal of any violence. The darker moments are balanced by light humor in both dialogue and song.

Performances are Nov. 3-5 and 10-12, Thursday through Saturday nights, beginning at 7:30 PM with one Sunday matinee on Nov. 6 at 2 PM. Adult tickets are $10 and student tickets are$5. Call the theatre box office at 606-539-4535 for reservations.
