Weatherly Heights Baptist Church on 26th year of building homes in Appalachia

Teams from Weatherly Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville, Ala. and Bethel Baptist in Danville, Ill. build a home for a family in need in Southeast Kentucky. The teams are working with Mountain Outreach, a University of the Cumberlands building ministry.

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Weatherly Heights Baptist Church has sent a missions team from Huntsville, Ala. more than 275 miles north every summer for 26 years. The group of more than 20 people arrived in Williamsburg, Ky. on June 13, ready to work.

The group has been assisting Mountain Outreach, a University of the Cumberlands ministry, in building homes for Southeast Kentuckians in need.

Steve Pinke, member of Weatherly Heights and the project head of the team, recounts the first experience with MO. “The kids finished high school and the mother became very accomplished,” he said. “I feel a lot of this resulted from them having a good home.”

The group works for just a week, but when they leave the home is either finished or very nearly complete.

“It is a satisfactory experience to feel like you’ve accomplished something as a group in a week,” said Pinke.

Weatherly Heights also extends their ministry at home, renovating homes in their local community. They work with other churches from several denominations. The group is working on the Mountain Outreach home with a group from Bethel Baptist Church in Danville, Ill.

“When you work as a community, ministry like this reaches everybody like it needs to,” says Bonnie Garrett, member of the Weatherly Heights team.

Mountain Outreach is a University of the Cumberlands ministry, with students and volunteers building more than 130 homes and making repairs and renovations to hundreds more for 27 years.

Located in Williamsburg, KY, University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; nine graduate degrees, including two doctorates, a specialist, and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
