University of the Cumberlands head baseball coach Brad Shelton has announced the signing of Schyler Sexton from Whitesburg, KY. Sexton is a graduate of Letcher County Central High School where he helped lead the team to an outstanding season in 2007.
During his sophomore and junior seasons he led his team to District Championships and was twice named All District. Following his Junior season he was invited to Florida to play in the Battle of the States and then participated in the Blue/Grey Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio.
As a senior, Schyler led his team to District and Regional Championships as well as a Semi State Runner Up. In the Semi State, Schyler pitched a complete game eight inning shutout in a 1-0 win over eventual Semi State Champion Johnson Central. He had a post season record of 4-0 with three complete games, two shutouts, and an ERA of .56 in 25 innings.
In his high school career, Schyler posted a 25-8 record with a 2.26 Earned Run Average and 220 strikeouts. He currently holds school records for wins, strikeouts, and games started at Letcher County Central High School.
Coach Shelton had this to say about the signing of Schyler, “Schyler has been very successful at the high school level and he is a great competitor. He was very good in the post season. He has good stuff and has some deception in his motion. I believe he has a bright future in our program.”
