University of the Cumberlands Women’s Soccer 2009 Wrap-Up

The University of the Cumberlands Women’s soccer team rounded out the 2009 season with an overall record of 11-5-2 and a Mid-South Conference (MSC) record of 5-1. The Patriots are coming off their third winning season in six years. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 the Patriots have had a combined record of 40-15-3.

Cumberlands fell shy of being ranked in the NAIA’s Top 25 this year as they started the pre-season ranked 36th. The Patriot ladies had a fresh start with new head coach Russell Stewart who worked hard with the Patriots to earn a final record of 11-5-2 coaching them to victory through two over time wins and two double overtime ties. Russell Stewart joined the University of the Cumberlands Athletic Department as the Women’s Soccer Head Coach at the beginning of this season. Stewart commented, “My program will have the chance to grow with the backing of the AD and all of the staff. There is no better place to be a head coach than here at Cumberland.”

This season’s performance from the Patriots earned the ladies a second place seed in regular season conference action. In the Mid-South Conference Tournament, the Patriots hit the field against Georgetown College for semi-final action. The ladies fell short of a win as they tied the Lady Tigers 2-2 in double overtime. This led to a round of penalty kicks where the Tigers advanced 7-8.

The Patriot Ladies were honored at the MSC Tournament, when they had players named to the All-Conference team and Academic All-Conference team. Receiving the awards for MSC All-Conference Team were Leslie Allred (Knoxville, TN) and Heather Lopez (Louisville, KY). Named to the MSC Honorable Mention Team were Davin Caudill (Frankfort, KY), Katie Hefelfinger (Tallahassee, FL), Tiffany Miller (Cox Creek, KY), Jamie Roberts (Owensboro, KY), Annie Marie Stegena (Las Vegas, NV), and Aurora Tacey (Knoxville, TN). Named to the MSC Academic All-Conference Team were Leslie Allred (Knoxville, TN), Brittney Gadd (Mercer, PA), Courtney Hamm (London, KY), Janelle McSurley (Wilmington, OH), and Tiffany Miller (Coxs Creek, KY).

Head Coach Russell Stewart finished up his first season as the Cumberlands Head Coach and should be pleased with how the season ended. The Patriots had a solid season winning 5 of their last 6 regular season games. All in all, the Patriot ladies had a great first season under Coach Stewart’s guidance and have even higher expectations ahead of them as they return many key starters to the field. The women's soccer program is in a good position to continue working towards their goal of becoming one of the Top 25 teams in the NAIA.
