And we have closed the chapter of the 2007 edition of the University of the Cumberlands Women Soccer Season. This season will not be forgotten by the players and coaches. It was a remarkable one that saw us accomplish much as a team and individuals. I believe everyone is looking forward to the start of next season.

Our final record was 16-5 which is tied for 2 nd most wins in a season for the women soccer program history and 2 nd highest winning percentage. It was the first winning season in 6 years. We beat Georgetown for the first time since 2003 and not only did we beat them but we beat them twice in the playoffs on their home field. I speak for all the players when I say, “There was no better feeling to accomplish this when it mattered the most.” We played Lindsey Wilson, National Champions of 2004 and 2006, to a 1-0 loss during the regular season and learned that when it comes to playoffs that Lindsey Wilson is a much tougher team. Lesson learned and one that we will apply for next year.

Individually, we had Leslie Allred set the mark for most goals in a career. She is only a junior and currently sits with 48. She will most certainly add to the total next year. Rebecca Rube also a junior is not far behind with 38 goals and surely next season will surpass the initial record of 45 goals. Red-Shirt junior, Lesley Bryan could also challenge to break the initial record as she has 32. Last by not least one person to watch over the next 3 years is Jamie Roberts. She is a freshmen, but had 17 goals in her first year. Whatever the record for career goals is at the end of 2008, Jamie certainly will challenge to beat it.

Nery Saucedo, a junior, is moving up the career assists list and could finish in 1 st or 2 nd place when all is said and done. She has 20 and the record for career assists is 33. Another player to watch is Stacie Tull as she has 14 assists in her first year, and I most certainly believe that she will challenge to break that record.

Not in the record book but certainly two players that should be noted as having great seasons were Davin Caudill and Heather Lopez who led our defense this year to 9 shutouts. The defense only allowed 11 goals during the regulars season in 16 games.

The following players were named to All Conference Team: Leslie Allred and Heather Lopez (1 st Team) Davin Caudill, Rebecca Rube, Nery Saucedo, and Stacie Tull (Honorable Mention). Jamie Roberts was twice player of the week in the conference while being once named Region XI player of the week. Stephanie Reid was once named players of the week in the conference and was once named Region XI player of the week. Leslie Allred was also once named player of the week for the conference and once named Region XI player of the week. Davin Caudill was once named player of the week for the conference.

Academically, we had just as much success with 9 players being named Academic All Conference. Players have to be a sophomore in academic standing and have cumulative GPA of 3.25. The following players achieved this honor: Leslie Allred, Brittany Becker, Lesley Bryan, Katie Delozier, Jamie Dubeck, Lauren Howe, Ashley Kennerly, Bethany Ott, and Nery Saucedo. That is 7 varsity soccer players 5 of whom started for us this season. Additionally, we had 5 players named Scholar-Athletes and they were: Katie Delozier, Jamie Dubeck, Ashley Kennerly, Bethany Ott and Nery Saucedo. Players have to be a varsity member, junior in academic standing, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 to achieve this honor.

Looking ahead to next season, we will return 9 starters from this year’s team. Our goals is that we stay motivated, have a challenging winter/spring and players stay committed during the summer to getting themselves fit. Most players have already begun running and will run over Christmas break to show that commitment and motivation. I believe that with a challenging winter/spring we will keep ourselves motivated and with the right attitude that we will get a lot out of the spring. We will be running more during the winter and spring to raise our fitness level past what is was last spring. We will continue our strength training and speed agility workouts. This spring I will focus on more team tactics then individual player’s development. We still will emphasize individual developments but make it more functional for the position that players play like we do during the fall. This will be the first spring with our roster size to be able to focus on team tactics and make some progress for the fall. We are scheduled to play Eastern Kentucky University, an NCAA I school and Northern Kentucky University, an NCAA II school on March 29 and Maryville College (TN), an NCAA III tournament qualifier, on April 13. This will give us more games during the spring and better competition which I hope makes us more prepared for the 2008 season. We now know everyone will be gunning for us so we will need to be prepared. Coming out of the spring the goal is to have everyone fitter then they were last spring of 2007. And most players last spring were as fit or fitter then when they came into training camp for 2006. I expect that in many cases that a player starting will come down to fitness level and that is something that I have been talking about for a long time and believe will happen.

Even with having 9 starters returning, I am still actively recruiting and trying to bring in several players that can challenge for a starting position this year. One of the key to our success this year was a healthy competition for starting time and playing time between players. Hopefully, we can attract some great players because of our success this past season. Our school does offer a great education and a chance to play at a high level. It is a great experience. Between bringing in another strong recruiting class and continuing to develop the existing players in our program, I believe that we can continue to close the gap on Lindsey Wilson and have an even more successful season next year. This group of players has the chance to leave a great legacy for women’s soccer at the University of the Cumberlands and are committed to doing so.
