2006 University of the Cumberlands Baseball Wrap-Up

The University of the Cumberlands (formerly Cumberland College) Patriot baseball team had their season end at the NAIA Region XI Tournament in Lebanon, TN, for the second consecutive season. The Patriots (39-16, 13-4) won the Mid-South Conference Regular Season Championship and made it to the final day of competition in the region tournament before being eliminated.

The season started rough with a 17-6 loss to Union College, but the Patriots responded by winning their next 13 games. They received votes for every NAIA top-25 poll and were ranked as high as #22.

The 2006 schedule was highlighted with a trip to NCAA Division I Belmont University and Greer Stadium in Nashville, TN. The Patriots also matched up with NAIA top-25 opponents, Union College, Cumberland University, Tennessee Wesleyan College, Campbellsville University, Lyon College, and Trevecca Nazarene University.

The Patriot offense was ranked among the national leaders all season long. They finished ranked in the top-10 nationally in doubles per game, triples per game, runs scored per game, hits per game, batting average, and slugging percentage.

Many individuals were honored for their contributions and accomplishments on the season. Head Coach Brad Shelton was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year; this was the second time Coach Shelton has been so honored. Earning Academic All-Conference honors were sophomores Adam Blakey (Jamestown, KY), Josh Bowman (Williamsburg, KY), Jon Silverman (Kettering, OH), and Ty Smallwood (Hamilton, OH), juniors Justin Adams (New Albany, IN), Joel Dobney (Xenia, OH), Daniel Guttridge (Richwood, KY) and Alex McDougall (Greenwood, KY), and senior Justin McDonald (LaGrange, KY). Named All-Conference Honorable Mention were senior shortstop John Sullivan (Beckley, WV) .343-0-28, junior outfielder Daniel Guttridge (Richwood, KY) .335-4-38, junior outfielder Trevor Urbanick (Conneautville, PA) .347-0-26, and red-shirt freshman pitcher Adam Blakey (Jamestown, KY) 5-3 with a 3.81 ERA. Named First Team All-Conference were senior pitcher Adam Walker ( Oak Ridge, TN) 11-3 with a 3.00 ERA, senior third baseman Chris Cartas ( Russellville, KY) .370-3-50, junior first baseman Victor Wooldridge ( Jamestown, KY) .395-12-48, sophomore designated hitter Chaz Gentry ( Greenville, SC) .433-4-63, and freshman catcher Robert Mills ( Las Vegas, NV) .405-12-53. Walker, Wooldridge, Gentry, and Mills were also named First Team All-Region.

The Patriots have now won 123 games over the past three seasons, including two Mid-South Conference Regular Season Championships, a Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship, and three NAIA Region XI tournament appearances.
