University of the Cumberlands
Department of Psychology

Whether their goal is to continue their education through graduate study or move directly into the workplace, students majoring in psychology at University of the Cumberlands will benefit from a solid foundation in research, theory, and application. The range of expertise among the faculty allows them to help students tailor their program of study to do advanced work in areas including learning and cognition, counseling, human factors, social interaction, and the psychology of religion.

Advanced student research is encouraged. UC students regularly attend the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association and present their work. Since 1997, four students have completed Presidential Scholars Research, and since 1998, two UC students have won the Regional Research Award given by PSI CHI, the national honor society in psychology. In 2008, one Presidential Scholar had her research published in the PSI CHI Journal of Undergraduate Research.

Recent graduates have pursued advanced study in fields such as Experimental Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Sports Psychology, School Psychology and Clinical/Counseling Psychology. Our graduates have been accepted at schools such as Universities of Kentucky and Tennessee, George Washington, Florida State, Johns Hopkins, Southern Illinois University, Ohio State, and a host of others. Other graduates have already begun their professional careers at the Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children, the Trillium Center and Oak Tree Hospital psychiatric services in Corbin, Kentucky, private/non-profit residential and outpatient treatment centers and the community mental health centers throughout the region surrounding the University of the Cumberlands.
