Sgt Matthew Halligan is originally from Frankfort, Kentucky and currently resides in Arlington, Virginia. He graduated from University of the Cumberlands with a Bachelors of Music Education in 2004 where he studied with James Corcoran. Matt also graduated with a Masters of Music from Eastern Kentucky University in 2009 where he studied with Jason Koontz.
Matt has been in “The Commandant’s Own” Marine Drum & Bugle Corps since October 24, 2005. He has had several collateral duties with “The Commandant’s Own” such as serving as both the Mallet Section Leader since 2008 and as a Percussion Music Arranger since 2007. He also was the Director’s Assistant from 2008-2010.
His awards include being awarded the Certificate of Commendation in 2006, and was nominated for the Marine Musician of the Year at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C. in 2006. Matt was the Phyllis Richardson Wood Award Winner in 2003, he was an honors recital member from 2000-2004, and he received the University of the Cumberlands Marching Band Senior Award in 2002, and 2003. Additionally, he was on The National Dean’s List in 2004 and received the University of the Cumberlands Outstanding Senior Musician Award in 2004.
