Students who choose to major or minor in chemistry at University of the Cumberlands will benefit from close working relationships with a highly trained faculty that prioritizes student research opportunities and practical experience. Course work prepares students to move directly into careers in such areas as secondary education, industrial chemistry, and environmental science, or to further their education with graduate studies in chemistry, medicine, dentistry, optometry, or pharmacy.
All chemistry majors complete a research project in an area of special interest during their senior year. In recent years, many of these student projects have been selected for summer programs at research institutions including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Clemson University, Notre Dame, Brown University, and the Natural History Museum in London, England.
Small classes ensure students will have the best possible access to superior equipment in classrooms and laboratories. The Alchemist Club, an affiliate of the American Chemical Society, sponsors field trips, special events, and guest speakers, offering students broad exposure to activities and developments in the field. Each year, the Alchemist Club sponsors the University of the Cumberlands Chemistry Symposium, a day of competitive events for high school students designed to excite young people about the possibilities of careers in science.
