REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH A MAJOR IN BIOLOGY—
55 semester hours as follows:
Required Biology Courses (17 credit hours)
- BIOL 131 Introduction to Organismal Biology
- BIOL 111 Introduction to Organismal Biology Laboratory
- BIOL 132 Introduction to Cellular Biology
- BIOL 112 Introduction to Cellular Biology Laboratory
- BIOL 245 Introduction to Population Biology
- BIOL 340 Genetics
- BIOL 495 Senior Seminar (or BIOL 498 Senior thesis)
Required Allied Math and Science Courses (20 hours)
- MATH 132 College Algebra, or higher math
- CHEM 142 and 111 General College Chemistry I and Lab
- CHEM 242 and 211 General College Chemistry II and Lab
7 hours of physical/earth science chosen from:
- PHYS 241 Physics I, PHYS 242 Physics II,
- PHYS 137 Physical Science, PHYS 117 Physical Science Lab,
- BIOL 231 Introduction to Environmental Science
Biology Electives, 300 and 400 Level Biology Courses (18 hours required)
Students completing this degree will be required to report scores from the ETS subject area exam in biology prior to graduation. Students who plan to pursue postgraduate studies in biology or related areas are strongly urged to satisfactorily complete MATH 140 Calculus, PHYS 241 and 242 Physics I & II, and CHEM 331, 332, 321, and 322 Organic Chemistry.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH A MAJOR IN BIOLOGY — includes the requirements for the B.S. plus a foreign language through the intermediate level. Students completing this degree will be required to report scores from the ETS subject area exam in biology prior to graduation.
MAJOR IN BIOLOGY WITH SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATION —55 hours to include the requirements for the B.S. with the following exception, BIOL 410, Teaching Practicum in biology and BIOL 241, Introduction to Environmental Science or BIOL 448, General Ecology are required . Students seeking secondary certification must also take the required professional education courses as described in the Department of Education portion of this catalog. Students completing this degree will be required to report scores from the ETS subject area exam in biology prior to graduation.
TRANSFER CREDIT — Transfer students must complete a minimum of 12 hours of upper division courses (including BIOL 495) for a major and 8 hours of upper division courses for the minor at Cumberland. Courses transferred from junior colleges and community colleges may not satisfy the requirements for upper division courses in Biology.
